"InTheGroov"
Jeff Coleman One Man Show

"InTheGroov" highlights the printmaking of Jeff Coleman in his first one man show in San Diego.
Jeff Coleman was born a Sagittarius in Virginia, just outside Washington D.C. Artistic from a young age his inspiration came from imitating comic book and graphic novel drawing styles.
His first forays into fine art began with photography in Junior High School, experimenting with pinhole cameras and darkroom processes. It wasn’t until Jeff’s freshman year in high school though that he was first exposed to printmaking processes, and he never looked back. An accomplished print-maker by graduation, he pursued his studies at the Atlanta College of Art.
Though Jeff’s focus changed for some years, his artistic muse would not be quieted. He fortuitously happened upon a quality etching press that re-energized his passion for Printmaking.
Jeff currently resides in San Diego, CA. He continues to refine his printmaking skills in a modest studio centered around the press. His works are held in private collections across North America.
Inspiration
"My ideas come from patterns that catch my eye, the weave of thread in fabric, gears meshing in a transmission. A symbol and the power it represents. The unconscious world that lay just beneath the surface. The ghosts images represent a memory or feeling in a particular moment. Distillations of the energies we are constantly emitting and attracting. My imagery wanders from abstract exercises to graphic figures with inspiration from Gustav Klimt and Alphonse Mucha. Klimt’s patterning and Mucha’s graceful, graphic stylings wind their way in and out of my work." -Coleman
Process
"Printmaking is my chosen process. It took one drypoint Intaglio project in high school to steal the heart of the engineer in me. From a subtle drypoint line, carving a fluid line on a relief block to the random uniqueness of liquid tusche on a litho stone, the numerous subtleties of each type of plate enhance the beauty of the print pulled from the plate. I revel in the different skills required for coaxing an image out of a plate. Controlling the variables in each plate to produce multiples that are at once similar to each other and still a completely original work of art is where I strive for excellence." -Coleman
Alchemy!!
"Marrying the inspiration and the process is where the fireworks happen. Turning a woodblock into an image printed on paper is magic. The plate, be it a metal etching plate, wood block or a litho stone changes what I set in motion into what it wants to be. Like it was there all along just waiting for me to work it out." -Coleman
